Floodplain Management and projects situated within floodplains

Executive Order 11988, Floodplain Management, requires federal agencies to take actions to reduce the risk of loss due to floods, to minimize impact of floods on human safety, health, and welfare, and to restore and preserve the natural and beneficial values served by floodplains. If a federally funded project is located in or will affect a floodplain, and no practicable alternatives exist to site the project outside of the floodplain, the Environmental Protection Agency will provide a 15-calendar-day window for public comments before projects may proceed.
